Positive Behaviour Support

At Gentle Guidance Allied Health, our Positive Behaviour Support (PBS) services are centred around the person. We focus on their strengths, needs, preferences, relationships and goals.

We recognise that behaviour communicates something. Rather than focusing solely on reducing behaviours of concern, we work collaboratively with participants, families, carers and support teams to understand what may be contributing to behaviour and develop practical strategies that support safety, independence, communication and meaningful participation.

Our approach is strengths-based, trauma-informed, person-centred and focused on improving quality of life.

Our Positive Behaviour Support Services

We provide individualised support that may include:

  • Comprehensive assessment and understanding of behaviours of concern

  • Functional behaviour assessment

  • Development of individualised Positive Behaviour Support Plans

  • Evidence-informed behaviour support strategies

  • Skill development to support communication, emotional regulation and independence

  • Strategies for families, carers and support workers

  • Environmental and routine-based strategies

  • Support with transitions and changes in routine

  • Collaboration with families, schools, support coordinators and other professionals

  • Regular review and adjustment of behaviour support strategies

  • Support to reduce the use of restrictive practices and, where restrictive practices are currently authorised, working towards their reduction and elimination in accordance with NDIS requirements

Our Approach

We take the time to understand the whole person, not just the behaviour.

Our practitioners work alongside participants and their support networks to identify strengths, understand individual needs and create strategies that are realistic and meaningful in everyday life.

We consider factors such as:

Communication, sensory needs, environment, relationships, routines, emotional regulation, trauma, skill development, health and wellbeing, choice and autonomy.

Where appropriate, we collaborate with other professionals involved in a participant’s care to ensure support is coordinated and consistent.

Who We Support

Our Positive Behaviour Support services can support children, young people and adults living with disability, including participants who experience behaviours of concern that may impact their safety, relationships, participation or quality of life.

Support can be delivered in the environments that are meaningful to the participant, including:

  • Home

  • School

  • Community

  • Day programs

  • Other relevant settings

  • Telehealth, where appropriate

Our Goal

The goal of Positive Behaviour Support is not simply to change behaviour.

It is to understand the person, build meaningful skills, increase choice and independence, strengthen relationships and create environments where the person can thrive.

At Gentle Guidance Allied Health, we believe every person deserves to feel understood, respected, heard and supported.

Our Approach

We believe Occupational Therapy is about more than completing everyday tasks. It is about helping people develop the skills, confidence and opportunities to participate in life in ways that are meaningful to them.

Our practitioners take the time to understand each participant’s individual circumstances, strengths, challenges and aspirations. Together, we develop practical strategies that can be incorporated into everyday environments and routines.

We consider factors such as:

daily living skills, sensory needs, emotional regulation, motor skills, executive functioning, environmental supports, routines, independence, community participation and personal goals.

Where appropriate, we work alongside families, carers, educators and other professionals to promote consistent support across the environments in which participants live, learn and engage.

Who We Support

Our Occupational Therapy services support children, young people and adults living with disability who would benefit from assistance to develop functional skills, increase independence and participate more fully in everyday life.

We tailor our approach to each participant’s developmental stage, individual needs, interests and NDIS goals.

Support may be provided in:

  • The participant’s home

  • Schools and educational settings

  • Community environments

  • Day programs and other relevant settings

  • Telehealth, where appropriate

Our Goal

Occupational Therapy is about helping people build the capacity to live a life that reflects their own goals, interests and aspirations.

Our goal is to support greater independence, meaningful participation, confidence and connection — one everyday achievement at a time.

At Gentle Guidance Allied Health, we believe every person deserves the opportunity to develop their potential, participate in their community and experience a life that is meaningful to them.
